Sierra Leone Film Makers Frown on Blood Diamond!

Blood Diamond is a 2006 Hollywood blockbuster movie. It is set on a true story about Sierra Leone’s bloody civil war from 1991 to 2002. The film shows how the country was torn apart by the struggle between government soldiers and rebel forces resulting to the deaths of thousands of people and the destruction of valuable property and dotted with untold atrocities.

The Blood Diamond movie has been frowned upon by Sierra Leoneans, especially the Sierra Leone film makers who believe the plot, controversies, film casts and soundtracks about the film are all total misrepresentation of Sierra Leone.  The film critics say the Blood Diamond portrays the country full of corrupt and selfish people, murderers, rapists and other vices. “Very little good things were said about Mama Salone in Blood Diamond,” film critics noted.

The movie ended up casting blames on the impoverish residents of Sierra Leone and for the pursuant of diamond riches thereby trampling upon the basic human rights of others. Talking to members of the Silver Spoon Movie Production, Messrs Mohamed Shaw, Mohamed Sesay, Jaime Yayah Berry and Julius Senessie they said the Blood Diamond movie is a total mockery and misrepresentation of Sierra Leone.

The casting Director Mr. Jaime Barry, a trained actor from the Venus Film Production in Ghana said the film was shot by Utemar Bros Pictures and that the footages were taken from Sierra Leone and they also misuse our language and people. He added that there is no Sierra Leonean who benefited from that movie.

He said if it was shot in Sierra Leone, even without using our casts to actors, the nation would have benefited a lot. Mr. Mohamed Shaw an actor and producer said there are better actors in Sierra Leone if given the chance and they would have made the story more real than the two main casts American Leonardo Di Caprio and Djimon Hounsou of Benin.

Speaking the Mende language in Blood Diamond, Mr. Shaw stated that it was a total embarrassment for the country and added that the movie has caused more harm than good to the country internationally. He said that investors are even afraid to come to the country because of what they saw in the Blood Diamond movie.

On the economic benefit, Mr. Julius T. Senessie said for an international movie to be shot in any country, it will rapidly boost that country’s economy. He said it will pay for every location, venue and even the extras would have benefited financially. He noted that even the film makers would have benefited from their gadgets, instruments.  “South Africa and Zimbabwe were the film was shot, they have benefited greatly and Sierra Leone is left to suffer the loss. The false impression going worldwide is that the film was shot in Sierra Leone and the country has got all these benefits. But in actual fact, the country has not benefited,” Mr. Senesie said.

Mr. Mohamed Sesay said the Blood Diamond film was budgeted for 100million US dollars and a Box Office of $171,409,179, was made for the same movie.

He said if the movie was shot in our country and our actors were used it would have boosted Sierra Leone’s economy. “The actors and their dependants would have benefited greatly thereby reducing the rate of unemployment in the country,” Mr. Sesay noted.

For this reason, the Sierra Leone film makers are calling on well meaning Sierra Leoneeans to come on board and tell the world that Sierra Leone is not how it is portrayed in the Blood Diamond movie.

The Silver Spoon Movie Production members are therefore calling on government and appropriate authorities in Sierra Leone to take legal action against the Warner Bros Pictures for the Blood Diamond film.
